Hermann Thiel
Expert - South Africa
Hermann is a governance and democracy specialist with over 25 years of experience strengthening democratic institutions across Africa, the Middle East, and other post-conflict regions. Beginning his career in post-apartheid South Africa as a political science lecturer and researcher on democratic consolidation, he has since held senior roles in high-stakes democratic efforts worldwide. In these roles, he provided strategic counsel to senior government officials and U.S. Congressional delegations, contributed to developing institutional frameworks that have shaped how emerging democracies conduct elections and combat corruption, and trained more than 10,000 civil servants, election officials, and civil society leaders in governance, anti-corruption, and electoral reform. Hermann brings deep knowledge of South Africa's democratic journey from its post-apartheid transition to contemporary debates about governance, inequality, and citizen empowerment, alongside global perspectives on what makes democracy work and what threatens it.
